According to preliminary findings, the vehicle operator was pronounced deceased at the scene. The exact identity of the individual is being withheld pending further investigation and at the discretion of the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the State Medical Examiner. The investigation suggests the fire originated in the engine compartment, stemming from combustible liquids igniting due to heated and energized engine components as a direct result of the crash. This classification indicates the incident is considered accidental.
The Bloomington Fire Company responded to the scene and was the primary fire department on site. Thirty firefighters were involved in the response, and the blaze was brought under control within five minutes of their arrival. The incident was first reported by passing motorists. The estimated loss associated with the vehicle is $13,000. No other individuals were displaced as a result of the incident.
