Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has reportedly saved American taxpayers over $30 million in a three-week period by canceling a number of government contracts and grants deemed unnecessary. According to a press release from the Department of Homeland Security, these savings, totaling more than $31.6 million, were realized through the de-obligation of funds from these contracts and grants. This initiative is part of a broader government-wide effort to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse within federal agencies.

Since taking office, Secretary Noem has reportedly implemented policies aimed at reducing the operational size of the Department of Homeland Security and curbing wasteful expenditures. These efforts have allegedly resulted in taxpayer savings exceeding $12 billion within her first 200 days, all while law enforcement, border security, and immigration enforcement operations have reportedly been enhanced. Secretary Noem’s personal review and approval of all Department of Homeland Security contracts exceeding $100,000 is cited as a key policy contributing to these savings, with an estimated $50 million saved daily since January 25, 2025.
The savings detailed do not account for additional cost reductions attributed to the administration’s immigration enforcement actions. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has previously estimated the annual cost of illegal immigration across all levels of government to be at least $150.7 billion as of early 2023. FAIR’s estimates projected an annual cost of $8,776 per individual, including U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. The department’s efforts to reduce the number of undocumented immigrants in the country are also reported to have generated an estimated $14 billion in annual cost savings.
