The issue stems from an improper calibration of the EPS software, which was developed to meet specific regulatory requirements. During the development process, a Tier 2 supplier, JTEKT North America Corporation, inadvertently set an incorrect value for the EPS target returnability Integrated Dynamics System (IDS) gain. This calibration error can cause the EPS system to enter a failsafe mode under certain driving conditions. Specifically, when a driver makes a sharp steering input during a turn while the IDS is set to Comfort mode and the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) is active, the system may incorrectly detect a fault.
When the EPS system enters failsafe mode, the power steering assist is disabled, and warning lights will illuminate on the instrument cluster. This means the driver will experience significantly increased steering effort, which could impair vehicle controllability and heighten the risk of a crash or injury. While Honda has received 84 warranty claims related to this issue as of August 28, 2025, there have been no reported injuries or deaths associated with the defect.
Honda began investigating the issue after receiving its initial complaint in October 2024. The investigation continued through early 2025, with dealership investigations in May 2025 identifying the customer driving mode as a potential contributing factor. Further analysis and investigation with the supplier concluded in August 2025, leading Honda to determine that a defect affecting motor vehicle safety existed and a recall was necessary.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their Acura RDX to an authorized Acura dealer. The dealer will perform a software update to reprogram the EPS control module with an improved version. This updated software is designed to prevent the failsafe mode from activating under the specified conditions. The improved EPS software was implemented into production on August 29, 2025.
The remedy software differs from the recalled component in that it will not trigger the failsafe mode under the problematic driving conditions. The recall is scheduled to begin with dealer notification on or about September 6, 2025, and owner notification is expected to commence on or about October 20, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) for affected vehicles will be searchable on the NHTSA website starting September 17, 2025. Honda utilizes a general reimbursement plan on file for this recall. Given the potential for loss of steering assist, Honda advises consumers to park affected vehicles outside and not drive them until the repair is completed.
