The incident occurred on September 24, 2024, when Zachary O’Meara, 28, attacked a fellow inmate, stabbing him multiple times in the head. The victim sustained six lacerations to the back of his head and one to his right temple, requiring surgical sutures. Prison officials recovered the weapon used in the assault, described as a five-inch, inmate-manufactured “shank” with a sharpened metal tip on one end, constructed from melted plastic. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Scranton Office conducted the investigation into the matter, with Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson prosecuting the case.
