A substantial portion of the approved funds, totaling $24.3 million, will be distributed as grant awards to 25 community revitalization projects. These grants are sourced from the Baltimore Regional Neighborhoods Initiative, the National Capital Strategic Economic Development Fund, and the Seed Community Development Anchor Institution Fund. Among the notable recipients is the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, which will receive $2 million to establish a Strategic Operations Center. This center will utilize advanced technology to improve coordination among emergency personnel and social service providers in the downtown area, thereby enhancing public safety efforts.

ReBUILD Metro in Baltimore will receive a combined $4.5 million to continue its work in transforming abandoned properties and spaces, particularly in East Baltimore. In Montgomery County, the Viva White Oak development project will benefit from $4 million in support. This ambitious $2.8 billion mixed-use development is slated to include thousands of housing units, extensive retail space, and facilities for high-skilled industries. Additionally, the University of Maryland, College Park will receive $5 million to support the construction of IonQ’s new headquarters, aligning with the state’s Capital of Quantum Initiative to drive significant public and private investment in quantum information science.

Further bolstering public safety and youth development, the Board of Public Works has allocated $6.1 million to We Our Us Unity Engagement Men’s Movement, Inc. This Baltimore-based organization is dedicated to positive change through community support, resource provision, and conflict resolution. The funding will enable the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services to offer non-residential services and programming, including community-based mentoring and life enrichment activities, for youth involved with the juvenile court system in Baltimore City. This initiative aims to provide structured support and guidance to young people, fostering positive choices and helping them recognize their potential.

The Board of Public Works also approved additional investments in key areas contributing to the state’s cultural and economic landscape. The National Aquarium in Baltimore will receive a $2.3 million capital grant for critical infrastructure upgrades, including a new roof designed to accommodate solar and green roof technologies. Furthermore, the Maryland Stadium Authority will receive a $26.5 million contract to support ongoing renovations at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, part of a broader state commitment to enhancing the fan experience.

In an effort to preserve natural resources and expand recreational opportunities, $1.6 million has been awarded for the acquisition and preservation of a historic farmstead in Frederick County. This land, adjacent to Gambrill State Park, will facilitate the expansion of the park’s popular campground and trail system. Another conservation effort will see a $325,000 award for the acquisition of a 27-acre property in Worcester County, which will become part of the Pocomoke State Forest. This expansion is expected to support the planting of over 18,000 trees as part of Maryland’s 5 Million Trees Initiative. Finally, The Cube CoWork in Baltimore will receive a $100,000 capital grant to support its expansion of services for women entrepreneurs, with a particular focus on Black women, mothers, and underserved communities.
