According to information released by the State Fire Marshal, the fire originated in the passenger compartment of the vehicle and was preliminarily determined to be incendiary in nature, involving an open flame applied to combustibles. The estimated loss from the incident is valued at $7,500 for the vehicle. The fire was quickly controlled by approximately 30 firefighters from the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Company within five minutes of their arrival. The fire was reportedly discovered by a passerby.
The investigation revealed that the juvenile suspect had broken into multiple vehicles prior to setting fire to the Ford F-350. The incident was captured on video surveillance, which aided investigators in locating the suspect shortly thereafter at a nearby gas station. The juvenile was subsequently released to their guardians under community detention, as directed by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services. No injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the fire.
