U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the arrest of Kilmar Abrego Garcia by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel. “Today, ICE law enforcement arrested Kilmar Abrego Garcia and are processing him for deportation,” said Secretary Kristi Noem. “President Trump is not going to allow this illegal alien, who is an MS-13 gang member, human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator to terrorize American citizens any longer.”
The arrest took place in Maryland. According to information released by the Department of Homeland Security, Garcia has a history of criminal activity. In 2019, the Prince Georges County Police Gang Unit reportedly validated Garcia as an MS-13 member. At the time of that arrest, he was found in possession of cash and drugs and was accompanied by two other individuals identified as MS-13 members.
Further details from the Department of Homeland Security outline a separate incident on December 1, 2022, involving the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Garcia was stopped for speeding, and the patrol officer noted eight other individuals in the vehicle. The absence of luggage in the car, coupled with all passengers reportedly providing Garcia’s home address as their own, led the officer to suspect human trafficking. During the interaction, Garcia allegedly feigned limited English proficiency and attempted to divert the officer’s attention. He reportedly stated that the vehicle’s owner was his employer in the construction industry.
In addition to these allegations, court filings indicate that Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez, sought an order of protection against him. Her petition reportedly detailed instances of physical abuse, including being punched, scratched, and having her shirt torn, resulting in bruises. Court documents also suggest that Garcia allegedly solicited nude photographs of a minor.
U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland has also issued a statement regarding the government’s intention to send Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Uganda. “Kilmar Abrego Garcia deserves his day in court. But Trump Administration officials – who continue to make public statements about his case that have been expressly repudiated by the courts – would rather insult judges and circumvent our justice system than uphold people’s constitutional rights.” Van Hollen met with Garcia virtually on Sunday to share with him that he is fighting for Garcia’s right to due process.
In June, Attorney General Bondi announced an indictment against Garcia would result in his return to the United States from El Salvador. The indictment, unsealed on May 21st, charges Garcia with alien smuggling and conspiracy to commit alien smuggling, offenses outlined in Title 8 of the U.S. Code. Prosecutors allege that over the past nine years, Garcia has been a central figure in a human smuggling ring, engaging in this activity as his full-time occupation. The grand jury’s findings suggest Garcia made over 100 trips, facilitating the movement of thousands of undocumented individuals, including women and children, across the country. Of particular concern are allegations that Garcia transported minor children, engaging in what is described as the trading of their innocence for profit.
