According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Secretary Kristi Noem has implemented cost-saving measures that have resulted in $12 billion in savings for American taxpayers over a seven-month period. These savings were achieved through various fiscal accountability processes implemented across the department. The department highlights that these savings were realized without impacting essential services related to law enforcement, border security, national security, immigration enforcement, and public safety.

The DHS reported that a significant portion of these savings, totaling $1.3 billion, was generated by reducing the size of the department and streamlining bureaucratic operations. Secretary Noem personally oversees and approves all contracts exceeding $100,000. This hands-on approach to contract review is credited with saving an additional $10.7 billion. The department asserts that this oversight has ended a period where unelected officials routinely approved large contracts, which allegedly led to widespread waste, fraud, and abuse of public funds.

Further financial benefits are noted in relation to the department’s immigration enforcement activities. While specific figures for these efforts are not directly attributed to the $12 billion total, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) estimates the annual cost of illegal immigration across all levels of government to be at least $150.7 billion. FAIR’s analysis suggests an average annual cost of $8,776 per individual associated with illegal immigration. The DHS also indicated that the removal of 1.6 million individuals from the country is projected to save $14 billion annually.

Secretary Noem has reportedly reviewed over 5,000 contracts since assuming her role and aims to process all contracts within a 24-hour timeframe. The department cited an example of past government spending where a single reheatable coffee cup reportedly cost $1,300, illustrating the type of unchecked expenditures that Secretary Noem’s reforms aim to address. The DHS stated that under Secretary Noem’s leadership, the department has achieved a secure border and removed criminal illegal immigrants, alongside the daily taxpayer savings.
