The newly implemented Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) system utilizes automated photo capture technology to conduct a comprehensive customs assessment, including biometric confirmation and eligibility checks, before travelers reach a CBP officer. This automation is designed to streamline the Simplified Arrival process, freeing up CBP officers to dedicate their attention to the individual traveler at their station. While the process is largely touchless and rapid, CBP officers remain available to guide passengers and provide assistance throughout the screening. Travelers who prefer not to use the EPP system have the option to notify an officer and proceed through the standard entry procedures.

EPP is one component of CBP’s ongoing Airport Modernization efforts, which focus on streamlining traveler processing by integrating advanced technologies. These upgrades are intended to boost national security and enforcement capabilities by creating a more efficient and lawful travel journey, thereby lessening the administrative workload for CBP officers. This move supports an anticipated increase in international travel, as evidenced by CBP processing over 420 million travelers in fiscal year 2024, a 6.6% rise from the previous year.

In addition to EPP, CBP offers several mobile applications designed to facilitate traveler entry into the U.S. These free applications are accessible through the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Eligible travelers can utilize the Global Entry mobile app to complete entry processing on their mobile devices before disembarking from their aircraft. This app, available at numerous locations, has been downloaded over 2 million times. Conditionally approved Global Entry members can also use the app and opt for the Enrollment on Arrival feature to complete their interview without a prior appointment when they return to the U.S.

For expedited processing, U.S. and Canadian citizens and permanent residents can enroll in the NEXUS program, a fee-based initiative that speeds up CBP processing for vetted, low-risk trusted travelers at select land border crossings and Canadian airports. Travelers who are not members of Trusted Traveler Programs can use the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app to securely submit their passport and travel information in advance. The MPC app is available at 53 ports of entry, including 14 Preclearance locations and four seaports, and is open to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, certain Canadian citizens, and Visa Waiver Program travelers. Non-U.S. citizens eligible under the Visa Waiver Program can use the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) mobile app to submit applications from their smartphones or other mobile devices, with an online option also available.

CBP emphasizes that regardless of the chosen entry method, all travelers must meet legal requirements, possess proper documentation, pass background checks and inspections, and adhere to visa terms. Violations of statutes or visa conditions may result in detention or removal.
