Per a press release from the Department of Homeland Security, Americans of any age can now apply to become law enforcement officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following the elimination of previous age restrictions. The change is part of a broader recruitment push under the Trump administration to bolster ICE staffing amid a surge in applications. In just one week since the campaign began, over 80,000 individuals have submitted applications.

This move comes as part of the Department’s effort to strengthen enforcement against individuals described as violent criminal noncitizens. ICE officials say applicants must still pass a physical fitness test, medical screening, and drug testing before entering duty. The new recruitment initiative is supported by expanded federal resources provided by the recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill, which has funded a series of incentives for incoming agents.

Incentives now include a signing bonus of up to $50,000, options for student loan repayment and forgiveness, and enhanced pay benefits such as Law Enforcement Availability Pay for Homeland Security Investigations agents and Administratively Uncontrollable Overtime for Enforcement and Removal Operations officers. Recruits also become eligible for enhanced retirement packages, a benefit particularly attractive to older applicants who had previously been barred due to age.

ICE is targeting Americans who value public safety and want to contribute to what the Department characterizes as a national mission to remove dangerous individuals from U.S. communities. The new policy is part of a wider push by the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security, currently led by Secretary Kristi Noem, to expand immigration enforcement following policy changes made after the 2024 election.
