According to a bulletin from the Maryland State Fire Marshal, a townhouse fire in Joppa was swiftly contained thanks to a functioning residential sprinkler system, preventing injuries and limiting the fire’s spread. The fire broke out on the first floor of a home on Staysail Drive on July 28 and was caused by a novelty-style lighter that exploded while in use. The explosion ignited a synthetic couch and nearby combustibles, triggering smoke alarms and the home’s sprinkler system. The sprinklers kept the fire from spreading beyond the living area until 25 firefighters from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company arrived and brought the blaze under full control within five minutes. The homeowner, who had just purchased the lighter, was not injured.
Three adults and one child were forced to evacuate the home and are being assisted by Harford County Disaster Assistance. Fire officials emphasized that the sprinkler system was instrumental in allowing the family to escape safely and minimizing the destruction caused by the fire.
