Consumers across the U.S. are being urged to check their pantries following a recall of Parashore brand canned pear slices due to the presence of elevated lead and cadmium levels. According to a July 23 announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), W.W. Industrial Group voluntarily recalled its 15-ounce Parashore Pear Slices in Juice after Maryland health officials detected the contamination during routine testing. While no illnesses have been reported, health officials stress the seriousness of the potential exposure—especially for children and pregnant individuals.

The recalled product, distributed through Grocery Outlet stores nationwide, poses a risk of heavy metal poisoning. Chronic exposure to high levels of lead and cadmium can lead to a range of serious health problems, including developmental delays and cognitive impairments in children. Adults may experience abdominal pain, vomiting, and other neurological symptoms depending on exposure levels and duration. The specific lot affected is Lot 3700/01172 6122J, with a production date of February 19, 2024, and a best-by date of February 19, 2027.

Consumers are advised not to consume the product and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. The FDA states the contamination was discovered through the Maryland Department of Health’s participation in the agency’s Laboratory Flexible Funding Model program. The company has begun an investigation into the source of the contamination and is cooperating with federal regulators.

Residents should be particularly vigilant, as lead and cadmium contamination is not typically detectable by taste, smell, or sight. While adults may recover from minor exposure, vulnerable populations like children can suffer long-term effects from even low-level exposure. Consumers with questions can contact W.W. Industrial Group at 516-676-9188, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Eastern Time.
