Per a summary released by the Washington County Board of Education (WCBOE), regular business meetings will return to a 6:00 p.m. start time beginning August 19, 2025. The announcement follows a trial period earlier this year during which meetings began at 4:00 p.m. Feedback collected during that time led the board to conclude that the later start better accommodates public participation. The change applies to monthly public business meetings, while work sessions will continue to be held at 1:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month.

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.
If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Also at the July 15 public meeting, WCBOE approved revisions to several policies, including updates to how the public may participate during board meetings. Under the new rules, no more than 15 speakers will be permitted at each meeting, each limited to four minutes. Participants must sign up in advance or at the meeting site before the comment period begins. Updates to the policy aim to maintain order and ensure alignment with broader conduct standards. Additionally, changes to student promotion policy (Policy IKE) clarify how academic progression is evaluated and emphasize involving parents in educational decisions. The changes align with Maryland’s statewide literacy initiatives and will be further detailed in upcoming administrative guidelines.
Superintendent Dr. David Sovine also addressed a delay in receiving federal education funds tied to Title II-A, III, and IV-A under the Every Student Succeeds Act. These funds support staff development, educational enrichment, and multilingual student programs. While WCPS has implemented short-term strategies to reduce the impact, the district is working with the Maryland State Department of Education to monitor the situation and prepare long-term contingencies. Dr. Sovine indicated that further clarity is expected in September.

As the district looks ahead to the 2025-2026 school year, it has launched the “Fit Check” campaign to help students and families understand and adhere to the updated dress code. A notable change is the prohibition of hats, hoods, and head coverings inside school buildings unless medically or religiously required. The campaign includes school-based visual reminders and encourages families to check their student’s attire each morning to ensure it complies with guidelines, which are aimed at maintaining a respectful and distraction-free learning environment.
