Three alleged members of the violent street gang MS-13 are facing federal racketeering charges tied to a deadly stabbing in Hyattsville, Maryland. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, the charges stem from a July 4, 2024, incident in which a homeless man was killed in what authorities describe as a retaliatory gang-related assault. The accused individuals — Maxwell Ariel Quijano-Casco, 24; Daniel Isaias Villanueva-Bautista, 19; and Josue Mauricio Lainez, 21 — appeared in federal court this week. Authorities allege the men, all either members or associates of MS-13, fatally attacked the victim following an earlier confrontation. Surveillance footage obtained by law enforcement shows the suspects returning to the scene roughly 15 minutes after the initial altercation, where they are seen approaching a parked blue Dodge Caravan and appearing to strike someone inside. The victim was later found deceased in the same vehicle.
The attack occurred in a used-car lot in Hyattsville, a community already grappling with concerns about violent crime.

Quijano-Casco and Villanueva-Bautista were arrested on August 23, 2024. At the time, Quijano-Casco was found in possession of a loaded semi-automatic handgun and cocaine. During interrogation, both men admitted to being present during the incident, with Quijano-Casco claiming he acted in self-defense. All three defendants are currently being held pending further proceedings. While the maximum sentence is life in prison, actual sentences will depend on federal guidelines and judicial discretion.
