According to a statement released by Congresswoman April McClain Delaney, Maryland officials are urging the federal government to deliver full disaster recovery assistance to communities in Mountain Maryland that were heavily impacted by severe flash flooding in May. Thanks to pre-installed early warning systems, there was no loss of life reported during the disaster. However, the extent of property damage has been substantial, with families and communities still struggling to recover. In response, McClain Delaney has been advocating in the U.S. House of Representatives for full funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), emphasizing the importance of a robust federal response to ensure timely recovery.
She and other members of Maryland’s Congressional Delegation, including Senator Chris Van Hollen, sent a bipartisan letter to the White House requesting comprehensive FEMA assistance for the state. McClain Delaney also stressed the necessity of fully funding and staffing the National Weather Service and NOAA. She credited their alert systems with preventing loss of life and underlined their continued importance for rural regions like Mountain Maryland, which are vulnerable to extreme weather events. She framed the push for funding as a matter of public safety, not politics, reinforcing that reliable emergency infrastructure is crucial to protecting residents in future storms.
