CBP officers referred a 2006 Jeep Cherokee for secondary inspection, where they discovered 12 canisters of freon along with boxes containing 12,000 counterfeit Texas vehicle registration stickers. The importation of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), such as the seized freon, is tightly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency. Since 2022, importing bulk HFCs without an EPA-issued allowance has been prohibited due to their significant environmental impact. Improperly imported refrigerants and counterfeit vehicle materials can lead to legal penalties, vehicle seizures, and pose environmental and public safety risks.
The driver and the seized items were handed over to the Brownsville Police Department, which initiated a criminal investigation. CBP officials emphasized the dual nature of the seizure — protecting both environmental standards and the integrity of state vehicle registration systems. Local residents should be aware that involvement in the use or distribution of counterfeit registration stickers may lead to prosecution under state law.
