The USDA’s announcement follows a series of actions aimed at enforcing President Trump’s Executive Order 14218, “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders.” In April, the Department directed states to implement stricter identity and immigration status checks during SNAP eligibility determinations. Then in May, it required state agencies to share SNAP data with the federal government to support fraud detection and program oversight.
According to USDA leadership, the changes are intended to reduce waste and safeguard public funds from being misallocated. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins emphasized that the move clarifies the original intent of the 1996 welfare reform law known as PRWORA, ensuring that taxpayer-funded benefits are restricted to eligible recipients.
