James William Wilson, Jr., 78, received a 12-year prison term after being convicted on 19 counts including wire fraud, money laundering, filing false tax returns, and aggravated identity theft. His wife, Maureen Ann Wilson, 77, was sentenced to four years for her role in the conspiracy and related crimes. Both were also ordered to pay $18.7 million in restitution. The funds had been obtained through fraudulent life insurance claims, forged documents, and false tax filings.

According to evidence presented at trial, the couple illegally secured over 40 life insurance policies with a combined death benefit exceeding $20 million. They used false information about applicants’ health, financial status, and prior insurance coverage. James Wilson, a former life insurance broker, misled investors and used their money to fund premiums for the fraudulent policies.

The couple attempted to hide the proceeds by transferring money through multiple bank accounts and trust entities. They also submitted tax returns in 2018 and 2019 that failed to report nearly $8 million in fraudulent income. Additionally, they forged signatures to designate themselves and their controlled nominees as beneficiaries, and Maureen Wilson impersonated others when dealing with insurers.

The investigation, led by IRS-Criminal Investigation, was supported by the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Maryland Attorney General’s Office. Authorities highlighted the case as a warning to others engaged in financial fraud, and the restitution and asset forfeiture process is expected to return some of the losses to affected parties and public coffers.
