Aberdeen Proving Ground will see a leadership change at one of the nation’s key defense commands, as Command Sgt. Maj. David J. Silva ends his tour as senior enlisted leader of the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives (CBRNE) Command. Silva’s next assignment will take him to Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia, where he will become the senior enlisted leader of U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Task Force-Civil Support, the nation’s only standing CBRN joint task force focused on disaster and emergency response across the U.S.

Silva’s departure marks the conclusion of a 27-month tenure during which he led enlisted personnel at the Army’s multifunctional CBRNE command headquartered in Maryland. Known for his expertise as a Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technician, Silva has deployed seven times and previously served in key command positions within the 20th CBRNE’s subordinate EOD units. His replacement, Command Sgt. Maj. Dennis R. Kirk from Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, is set to take over the role in August.

The transition underscores the high operational tempo and readiness demands at the 20th CBRNE Command, which provides rapid-response capabilities for some of the world’s most dangerous threats, including weapons of mass destruction and hazardous materials. Headquartered in Northeast Maryland’s science and security corridor, the command includes EOD and CBRN units, a global field medical lab, and nuclear disablement teams. Its personnel deploy from 19 installations across 16 states to support missions both abroad and within U.S. borders.
