According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment against 46-year-old John Petonyak on June 18. The charges stem from fires that occurred on August 11, 2021, involving materials connected to two restaurant properties: The Gingerbread Man on South Court House Avenue and Faye’s Kitchen on South Hanover Street. Investigators allege that Petonyak intentionally started both fires.
The case was developed through a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Carlisle Police Department, and the Pennsylvania State Police. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Ford. If convicted, Petonyak could face up to 40 years in prison, along with supervised release and financial penalties.

Residents and business owners in Carlisle may take interest in the outcome of the case, as arson investigations and prosecutions serve both as a deterrent and a means of preserving community safety and property. No injuries were reported in connection to the fires, but the events disrupted downtown activity and caused damage to local establishments. The public is reminded that charges are only allegations until proven in court, and all individuals are presumed innocent until found guilty.
