Consumers are being urged to immediately discard or return certain chicken fettuccine alfredo meals sold at Walmart and Kroger after a multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes has resulted in serious illnesses and fatalities. The recalled meals were distributed nationwide under the Marketside and Home Chef brands and sold in refrigerated sections. They include Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine in 12.3 oz. and 32.8 oz. packages with best-by dates up to June 26 and 27, respectively, and Home Chef Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo 12.5 oz. meals with a best-by date of June 19 or earlier. The packages may bear establishment numbers “EST. P-50784,” “EST. P-47770,” or “EST. P-47718” inside the USDA inspection mark. Consumers are advised not to eat or serve these meals, and to check their refrigerators and freezers for the products.
According to the FDA, 16 of the 17 people affected have been hospitalized, and more than half of those interviewed reported eating chicken fettuccine alfredo meals. The FDA, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, and CDC traced the outbreak to FreshRealm’s facilities in San Clemente, California; Montezuma, Georgia; and Indianapolis, Indiana. While routine FSIS sampling on March 19 identified the outbreak strain of Listeria in a batch that was not distributed, investigators have not yet confirmed the exact source of contamination.

Listeria infection primarily affects pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While many may only experience mild symptoms such as fever or nausea, more severe illness can include confusion, convulsions, and loss of balance. Pregnant women are particularly at risk, as listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or neonatal infection. Consumers experiencing symptoms are urged to contact their healthcare provider and report the illness.
Federal agencies are continuing to collect data and conduct inspections to determine whether further steps are needed. Additional updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
