A limited number of 2025 Ford Explorer SUVs are being recalled due to improperly torqued front brake caliper bolts, which could lead to reduced braking performance and increase the risk of a crash. According to a recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), only three vehicles are affected, but one-third of them may have the defect.

Ford Motor Company identified the issue during a review of vehicle repair records after receiving a field report involving missing front brake caliper bolts on a 2025 Explorer with just 270 miles on the odometer. The bolts in question may have been reinstalled with insufficient torque during an unrelated repair before the vehicles were delivered to customers. If the bolts loosen or fall out, the caliper may shift away from the rotor during driving, particularly over bumps or while turning.
In the worst-case scenario, this could result in increased stopping distances or cause the caliper to strike the wheel, possibly weakening the wheel’s structure. Ford confirmed it is aware of only one report involving missing bolts and has not received any reports of crashes or injuries related to this defect.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive mailed notifications between June 16 and June 20, 2025. They will be instructed to bring their Explorers to a Ford or Lincoln dealership for inspection. If the bolts are found to be loose, they will be retorqued to factory specifications. If bolts are missing, the caliper and brake pads will be replaced at no cost. Drivers may notice warning signs such as clunking noises when driving over bumps or grinding sounds if the caliper contacts the wheel.
This recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 25V371 and Ford Recall Number 25S60, follows an internal review approved by Ford’s Field Review Committee on May 27, 2025. VIN-specific information is available, and affected owners are advised to check their vehicle’s status through Ford’s recall search tool or contact their local dealership for more information.
