Mazda North American Operations has issued a recall for approximately 171,412 vehicles in the United States and Canada due to a defect affecting the air bag system. The issue could result in the air bags failing to deploy during a crash if the battery is completely depleted after the ignition is left on without the engine running. This recall affects certain 2024-2025 Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 models, all equipped with a specific type of Sophisticated Air Bag Sensor (SAS) unit.

The problem stems from a situation where, if the battery is drained with the ignition in the “ON” position for more than two hours, an internal fault is stored in the SAS unit. When the battery is recharged and the vehicle is restarted, the air bag warning light activates, indicating a malfunction. Vehicles experiencing this fault will not have operational air bags in the event of an accident. Mazda reports that this issue is specific to customer usage patterns seen in the U.S. and Canadian markets, with no incidents reported elsewhere.
The recall impacts 51,857 Mazda3 vehicles, including 24,683 units produced at the Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation plant and 27,174 units manufactured in Japan. Additionally, 119,555 Mazda CX-30 vehicles built at the Mazda de Mexico plant are involved. The company clarified that vehicles not included in the recall were produced with updated SAS units.

Mazda began investigating the issue after receiving a field report in June 2024. Although initial assessments concluded that the problem was related to customer usage and did not constitute a safety risk, further inquiries from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) led Mazda to reconsider. Following technical reviews and discussions with NHTSA, Mazda’s Quality Audit Committee decided on May 23, 2025, to proceed with the recall as a precautionary measure. No accidents or injuries have been linked to the defect to date.
To remedy the problem, Mazda dealers will reprogram the SAS unit with improved software or replace it altogether at no cost to owners. Notifications to dealers are scheduled for early June 2025, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed by late July 2025. All affected vehicles remain under full warranty coverage, eliminating the need for a separate reimbursement program.
