Kia America, Inc. has issued a safety recall for 82,281 of its 2025 K5 sedans due to a noncompliance issue with the vehicles’ parking lamps. The recall addresses a software error in the Power-net Domain Controller (PDC) that prevents the parking lamps from maintaining a steady illumination when the turn signal or headlamps are activated, violating federal safety regulations and potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

The affected K5 models were manufactured between February 20, 2024, and April 23, 2025, at Kia Autoland Hwaseong in South Korea. The issue stems from incorrect software installed during production, causing the lamps to fail the conspicuity requirements outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108. Vehicles produced after April 30, 2025, have been fitted with updated software, while units manufactured between April 24 and April 29, 2025, will be updated before being sent to dealers.
Kia plans to notify vehicle owners via first-class mail beginning June 24, 2025. Owners will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a Kia dealership for a software update to the PDC unit, which will restore the proper operation of the parking lamps. Additionally, an over-the-air (OTA) software update may be available for added convenience. The company has also committed to reimbursing any repair costs incurred prior to the recall under its general reimbursement plan filed in 2024.

The noncompliance recall, assigned NHTSA number 25V351, will follow a phased rollout. Dealers were scheduled for notification on May 27, 2025, and customers can check the status of their vehicles using the VIN search feature starting May 30, 2025. Kia has not reported any warning signs prior to the defect manifesting, and the recall does not specify any related incidents or injuries. The faulty PDC units were supplied by Kyungshin, based in Incheon, South Korea.
