Midea is recalling approximately 1.7 million U and U+ window air conditioners sold across the United States due to concerns that water pooling inside the units could lead to mold growth. The presence of mold poses health risks, including respiratory infections and allergic reactions, prompting action from the company. An additional 45,900 units were sold in Canada and are included in the recall.

The affected air conditioners were distributed under several brand names, including Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. Designed for window installation, the units were available in cooling capacities of 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTUs, measuring roughly 22 inches wide and 14 inches high. Customers can identify recalled units by checking the model number located on a label on the front right side of the device. The air conditioners, sold with remote controls and mobile app compatibility, were available through major retailers such as Costco, Menards, Home Depot, and Best Buy between March 2020 and May 2025, priced between $280 and $500.

Consumers reported at least 152 incidents involving mold, with 17 cases leading to symptoms like respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats. In response, Midea is offering customers a choice between a full or prorated refund based on the unit’s age, or a free repair. Consumers opting for a refund must return the unit or provide photographic evidence of a cut power cord. Repair options include technician installation of a new drain plug or a DIY kit with necessary parts and instructions.
