Johnson Health Tech Trading has announced a major recall involving approximately 3.8 million BowFlex adjustable dumbbells, citing an impact hazard that could lead to serious injuries. The recall affects the BowFlex 552, 52.5-pound model, and the BowFlex 1090, 90-pound model, both of which have been widely sold across the United States through retailers such as Johnson Fitness & Wellness, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and online outlets. The affected products were distributed as early as 2004 by BowFlex Inc., formerly known as Nautilus Inc., and later by Johnson Health Tech Trading starting in May 2024.

The hazard stems from a defect where the weight plates can detach from the dumbbell handles during use. Johnson Health Tech Trading has reported 12 incidents involving units it sold, though no injuries were noted. In contrast, BowFlex Inc. recorded 337 incidents, including 111 injuries such as concussions, broken toes, abrasions, and contusions. The dumbbells, identifiable by specific model and serial number ranges located on the bottom of the molded plastic tray, feature a manual adjustment mechanism to alter the weight configuration.

Consumers are being advised to stop using the dumbbells immediately. Johnson Health Tech Trading is offering refunds in the form of vouchers or replacements for its units, while those who purchased through BowFlex Inc. will receive a prorated voucher along with a complimentary one-year JRNY digital fitness membership. Pre-paid shipping labels will be provided for returning the handles and bases. The company has committed to contacting all known purchasers directly to facilitate the process.
