According to Ford’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the vehicles involved had not properly received the remedy required by Safety Recall 23C38. The vehicles may have software logic that fails to reset the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system to its default setting each time the ignition is cycled, contrary to federal safety standards. The problem stems from a software upload error during repairs, where the correct update was not installed.
The software defect can leave the vehicle in an Off-Road Mode with reduced ESC function after restarting, without alerting the driver through dashboard indicators. This condition violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 126, which mandates that ESC systems revert to default settings on ignition start. Ford stated there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to the defect.

Owners will be notified beginning June 9, 2025, and are advised to visit their local Ford or Lincoln dealers for a free software update to the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM). Dealerships will validate the update using Ford’s Software Validation Form before closing the service action. Ford has a reimbursement plan in place for owners who previously paid for these repairs out-of-pocket.
Notifications to dealers are scheduled for June 4, 2025, with owner notification letters expected to be mailed in phases and completed by June 13, 2025. Owners seeking additional information can contact Ford or access specific vehicle details through Ford’s OASIS database or hotline.
