Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) has announced a voluntary recall impacting approximately 235,640 Ram ProMaster vehicles produced between August 17, 2021, and May 14, 2025. The recall addresses a potential defect involving the vehicles’ rearview camera systems, which may fail to display the necessary rearview image while backing up, increasing the risk of accidents.

The affected models, spanning the 2022 to 2025 model years, are equipped with a security gateway module (SGW) that could interfere with communication between vehicle modules. This disruption can prevent the rearview image from appearing on the vehicle’s display screen during a reversing maneuver, which violates the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111 for rear visibility. A nonfunctional rearview camera could leave drivers unaware of obstacles behind the vehicle, posing a serious safety hazard if the driver relies solely on the camera for navigation.
An investigation into the issue was initiated by Chrysler’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance division in September 2024, following a review of warranty claims and field reports. Collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams, as well as the component supplier Robert Bosch LLC, led to the identification of the software-related cause. By May 7, 2025, it was determined that the defect warranted a recall, and the Vehicle Regulations Committee authorized the action on May 15, 2025.

To remedy the problem, Chrysler will reprogram the affected security gateway modules with updated software to restore proper camera functionality. Notifications to dealers are scheduled to begin on May 29, 2025, with vehicle owners being informed between June 19 and June 25, 2025. The software update will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners, and until repairs are completed, drivers are advised to exercise additional caution when reversing.
