According to the automaker, the head restraint brackets on some front passenger seats may not have been properly welded to the seat frame, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the restraint during a crash. GM warns that an improperly welded head restraint could fail to perform as intended, increasing the risk of injury in the event of an accident. The defect was traced to a seat supplier whose usual procedures for identifying welding issues were not followed during production.
The issue came to GM’s attention on March 21, 2025, after a quality engineer filed a report through the company’s internal safety alert system. The supplier had found 25 improperly welded brackets out of 840 seat frames inspected. GM’s own plant inspection identified six affected vehicles, which were corrected on-site. An investigation confirmed that a new operator at one of the welding stations may not have correctly positioned the brackets, prompting GM to identify and recall 32 vehicles that escaped initial containment.

As part of the remedy, GM dealers will inspect and replace the front passenger seat frame if needed. Replacement frames have been sourced from outside the defective manufacturing window and include updated production safeguards such as improved locating pins and a part proximity sensor. All recalled vehicles are still under warranty, and no reimbursement program will be offered. GM has not received any reports of incidents or injuries related to the defect. Dealer notifications began on May 8, 2025, and vehicle owners are scheduled to be contacted starting June 23, 2025.
