Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall for nearly 90,000 Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback Quattro vehicles produced between 2021 and 2024 due to a manufacturing defect that could lead to engine fires. The issue stems from improperly torqued cylinder head cover screws, which may loosen over time and allow oil to leak, increasing the risk of fire if the oil contacts hot engine components.

According to the safety report submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 78,313 Audi Q5 Quattro and 11,104 Audi Q5 Sportback Quattro models manufactured over a three-year period. The defect is estimated to be present in roughly five percent of the recalled vehicles. The fault was linked to inconsistent screw-tightening torque during assembly, making the sealing of the cylinder head cover unreliable in some cases.
Volkswagen has identified the potential safety hazard as a fire risk, especially if leaked oil reaches engine parts that operate at high temperatures. While early leaks may go unnoticed, advanced cases could produce odors or smoke from the engine compartment, prompting vehicle owners to park their cars immediately as a precaution.

The company has outlined a remedy that includes inspecting the affected screws, retightening them to specification, and replacing any components as necessary. Owners of vehicles outside the warranty period may be eligible for reimbursement. The issue was addressed in production through changes at the engine manufacturing facility in May 2024. Volkswagen plans to notify dealers by May 9, 2025, and affected owners by July 8, 2025.
