Polestar Automotive USA has announced a recall affecting all 3,664 units of its 2025 Polestar 3 model due to a software noncompliance issue that affects the visibility of the rearview camera. The problem stems from the center display not defaulting to the rearview image when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, which violates federal safety standards and could heighten the risk of a crash during backing maneuvers.

The issue was identified after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) initiated a review based on three vehicle owner complaints. On February 10, 2025, Polestar received inquiries from NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation. Following a series of discussions, the company confirmed its decision to issue a voluntary safety recall on May 7, 2025. The noncompliance relates to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111, which mandates proper rear visibility for vehicles in reverse.
The software in affected vehicles defaults to a 3D/360-degree camera view instead of the standard rearview image under specific conditions, particularly if the car has not exceeded 10 mph since the last reverse shift. This deviation from expected behavior led to the classification of the issue as a critical safety concern. The new software will ensure the rearview image displays automatically when the vehicle is placed in reverse.
