Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting that took place Monday evening in downtown Frederick, Maryland, involving an individual reportedly undergoing a mental health crisis. According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was flagged down around 6:44 p.m. in the 300 block of North Market Street regarding a person in distress. The man reportedly approached the deputy while armed with a knife. Despite receiving repeated commands to drop the weapon, the individual did not comply. The deputy discharged his firearm once, striking the man.

A knife was recovered at the scene, and deputies rendered immediate aid until emergency medical services arrived. The individual was then transported to a nearby trauma center. The deputy involved was unharmed in the encounter.

The Frederick Police Department is conducting the criminal investigation into the shooting. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division was notified but opted not to respond to the incident. Officials have stated that there is no continuing threat to the public.
