Two traffic citations against Frederick journalist Levi Trumbull were dismissed this week after the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office deputy failed to appear in court. The tickets, issued for allegedly running a red light and failing to provide a driver’s license during a traffic stop, are now set to be expunged from Trumbull’s record. The development follows growing public criticism of the department’s handling of the case, which some have called an overreach of authority.

The incident occurred on March 29, when Trumbull was pulled over near Route 355 and Lowes Lane in Frederick County, Maryland. According to a sheriff’s report, the deputy claimed Trumbull’s vehicle passed through a red light and described the reporter as appearing nervous, with bloodshot eyes and jittery movements, contradictory to behavior displayed on the body camera footage. Despite showing no signs of intoxication and legally refusing to perform field sobriety tests, Trumbull was arrested and transported for further evaluation.

The Sheriff’s Office initiated a full DUI investigation and impounded Trumbull’s vehicle. Although the department maintained it had probable cause due to Trumbull’s refusal to participate in field sobriety exercises, Maryland law does not require individuals to comply with such tests. Following the arrest, a breathalyzer test administered at the detention center confirmed a blood alcohol content of 0.00. A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was unable to determine whether Trumbull was under the influence, and the reporter invoked his right to remain silent, as legally allowed by law.

The official case report listed the DUI matter as “Police Information” with no formal arrest recorded, and the charges were ultimately cleared. Still, the incident prompted a wave of backlash on social media, with critics accusing the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office of abusing its authority and targeting a journalist known for his work on police accountability. Fortunately for Trumbull, his legal issues are now behind him.
