A South Carolina woman has been sentenced to more than four years in federal prison after pleading guilty to participating in a $1.4 million embezzlement and identity theft scheme that lasted over a decade and involved the unauthorized use of business credit accounts for personal expenses. Joseph had worked as a bookkeeper at a greenhouse and garden center in Caroline County, Maryland, owned by one of the victims. Alongside her husband Robin Joseph, she conspired to misuse three credit-card accounts linked to the business and its owner. From at least January 2011 through August 2021, the couple carried out a range of unauthorized transactions, funding personal vacations, home renovations, pet care, and everyday purchases using stolen funds.

The fraudulent charges included over $200,000 at Walmart, more than $53,000 to AT&T for personal phone bills, and upwards of $116,000 to PayPal. The couple also used the stolen funds to pay more than $90,000 in utility bills and spent nearly $200,000 on home improvement purchases at Lowe’s, some of which were used to renovate a home they previously owned in Easton, Maryland.
