A woman was arrested at the Port of San Luis on April 29 in an alleged child-smuggling attempt after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered inconsistencies during a routine border inspection. Authorities say the suspect, a 23-year-old Mexican national and U.S. Legal Permanent Resident, attempted to cross the border with a 5-year-old boy using fraudulent documentation and sedatives to mask the child’s true identity and condition.

The woman approached the San Luis I Port of Entry at approximately 3 a.m. in a 2013 Chevrolet sedan, claiming to be the mother of the child sleeping in the back seat. She presented a U.S. birth certificate for the child; however, CBP officers noticed the boy was in an unusually deep sleep and appeared younger than the age listed on the document. Further examination revealed the certificate, though valid, did not belong to the child, who was determined to be a Mexican citizen lacking proper entry documents.

Officials allege the woman admitted to administering sedatives to the child in an effort to bypass scrutiny during the inspection. According to CBP, this tactic is commonly used in child smuggling operations to suppress alertness and reduce questioning at the border.

The woman was taken into custody, and the vehicle was seized. Homeland Security Investigations, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has assumed responsibility for the case. CBP emphasized that charges brought against individuals are allegations and that those accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

CBP officers at the Port of San Luis continue to enforce laws designed to prevent human trafficking and protect vulnerable populations. Their responsibilities include identifying smuggling trends, conducting immigration checks, and ensuring the safety of those entering the country.
