The Maryland State Board of Education conferred the honor in April, citing the schools’ dedication to helping children of military families transition socially and academically. The recognition requires meeting specific criteria, including appointing a military liaison, creating accessible online resources, implementing peer-led transition initiatives, and providing staff training on military culture and student needs.

The effort was led by Andrea Bridgewater-McCarthy, School Liaison Officer for Fort Detrick Child and Youth Services. Her collaboration with school administrators and staff began with a joint planning session on November 1, 2024, and culminated in a successful application process that distinguished Frederick County as one of only two counties in the state to achieve the designation last year.

To meet the requirements, Whittier Elementary named Randi Gonzalez as its military liaison, while West Frederick Middle appointed counselor Rayven Mitchell. Both underwent MIC3 training and now serve as welcome coordinators for new military families. Each school also launched online resource hubs and peer mentorship programs, providing vital guidance and emotional support to incoming students.

Bridgewater-McCarthy also oversaw educator training sessions focused on military culture and student transitions, with staff from both schools participating in professional development. The Purple Star designation, which lasts for two years, was officially recognized during a Maryland State Board of Education meeting on April 29.
