Set to roll out early this summer, the feature enables account holders to access their SSN through the my Social Security portal, including via mobile devices. It is intended for use in situations unrelated to direct Social Security business—such as completing paperwork or verifying identity—especially for individuals who have misplaced their physical SSN card or forgotten their number. The digital tool reduces the need for in-person visits or waiting for replacement cards by mail.
According to the SSA, this new option is designed with security in mind, reinforcing the agency’s commitment to safeguarding personally identifiable information (PII). By minimizing reliance on physical cards, the feature is expected to reduce the risks associated with lost or stolen documents while streamlining access for millions of users nationwide.
