After a six-year hiatus, the Social Security Administration has officially reinstated National Social Security Month, marking its return this April under President Trump’s administration. The campaign, which promotes awareness and access to Social Security benefits, was last observed in 2019. The initiative had been halted during the COVID-19 pandemic and remained dormant throughout the Biden administration.

The observance, aimed at assisting Americans in navigating and securing their Social Security benefits, will extend through August 14 this year to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the program. According to the SSA, the reinstatement of the campaign reflects a renewed commitment to public outreach, reviving a tradition dating back to the agency’s founding. During the initial roll-out of Social Security in the 1930s, workers traveled nationwide to enroll Americans, a model the agency is drawing upon to improve contemporary access.

In tandem with this outreach, the SSA is executing a broader effort to reorient the agency around customer service. Guided by directives from President Trump, the SSA has undertaken operational reforms including eliminating telework flexibility, reassigning support staff to frontline roles, and cutting administrative layers to enhance responsiveness and efficiency.
