Hyundai Motor America has issued a recall for 1,589 units of the 2025 IONIQ 5 N, citing critical issues with software controlling braking and acceleration. The defects, identified in vehicles manufactured between December 18, 2023, and January 7, 2025, could lead to reduced braking performance or unexpected acceleration—both of which pose an increased risk of crashes.

The problem centers around two distinct software faults in the Integrated Electronic Brake (IEB) and Vehicle Control Unit (VCU). During specific maneuvers using the Left-Foot Braking (LFB) feature, the IEB software may reduce braking pressure unexpectedly. Separately, the VCU software could allow momentary acceleration even after the driver releases the accelerator, especially when the N e-Shift mode is active. No dashboard warnings or indicators accompany these malfunctions.
Affected vehicles were built by Hyundai Motor Company in Korea and are equipped with performance features intended for racetrack conditions. Both the IEB and VCU components were supplied by Hyundai MOBIS. The automaker identified the issue as a result of flawed software logic and has implemented improved software as of April 2, 2025, in ongoing production.

Hyundai will notify owners starting June 9, 2025. Until then, vehicle owners are advised not to use the LFB or N e-Shift features. Repairs will involve free software updates either through Hyundai dealerships or, for those who opt in, via over-the-air updates through the Bluelink system. Hyundai will also reimburse owners who paid for related repairs prior to the recall in accordance with a plan submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) earlier this year.
