NASA has announced plans for U.S. spacewalk 93, scheduled for Thursday, May 1, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the International Space Station’s power systems. The spacewalk is designed to support the future installation of the International Space Station Rollout Solar Arrays (IROSA), which will increase the station’s power capacity by nearly 30%. With the addition of the new arrays, overall electrical output is expected to rise from 160 kilowatts to approximately 215 kilowatts. The solar arrays themselves will be delivered on a future SpaceX Dragon resupply mission later this year.
McClain, a veteran of two previous spacewalks, will wear a suit marked with red stripes and serve as crew member 1. Ayers, embarking on her first spacewalk, will wear a suit with no markings and serve as crew member 2. This upcoming mission marks the 275th spacewalk conducted for the assembly, upkeep, and upgrade of the station.
