Abrego Garcia’s detention has drawn legal and political attention after the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that his deportation was unlawful. Despite this ruling, federal officials under the Trump Administration confirmed in a court filing that he remains in custody in El Salvador, without specifying measures being taken to comply with the court’s directive. Earlier this week, Van Hollen had requested a meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele during the latter’s visit to the United States. In a letter addressed to Salvadoran Ambassador Milena Mayorga, the Senator described the urgency of the situation and detailed the legal decisions supporting Abrego Garcia’s repatriation. Van Hollen has also met with Abrego Garcia’s family members, who remain deeply concerned for his safety and health. His presence in El Salvador is intended not only to advocate diplomatically but also to check on the well-being of his constituent directly. The Senator reiterated that securing Abrego Garcia’s release should be a priority for U.S. authorities and vowed to continue pressing the issue until his constituent is safely returned home to Maryland.
