Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott has appointed Larry Carlton Simmons Jr. to the Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners, selecting a seasoned community advocate and nonprofit leader to help guide the city’s public education system. Simmons brings more than 20 years of experience in public service, including work in community organizing, program development, and leadership across several Baltimore-based organizations. His appointment follows years of involvement in education-focused initiatives, most notably his role as Chair of the Parent and Community Advisory Board for city schools.

A resident of Edmondson Village in West Baltimore, Simmons has long championed educational equity and community engagement. His previous leadership roles include positions at Baltimore’s Promise, the Baltimore City Health Department, and Elev8 Baltimore, where he supported family-school partnerships and student success. He currently directs community engagement efforts for the Nobody Asked Me Campaign, a project amplifying the voices of Baltimore youth and families, while also consulting to support the sustainability of BIPOC-led organizations.

Simmons is recognized nationally for his leadership, having earned distinctions such as the JHU Bunting Fellowship, BMe Vanguard, and a fellowship with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. His current board roles include Chair of the Baltimore Children and Youth Fund, Co-Chair for Wide Angle Youth Media and New Song Academy, and board member of the United Way of Central Maryland. He also serves as a Senior Fellow at Attendance Works.

Simmons’ appointment comes as the School Board continues its mission to improve educational outcomes for over 75,000 students enrolled in Baltimore City Public Schools. The Board is charged with raising academic achievement and strengthening the management of the city’s school system. Commissioners are selected from a pool of candidates vetted by a community panel and finalized by the Mayor’s Office of Children & Family Success.

Applications to fill one additional vacancy on the Board opened on March 25, 2025, and will remain open until April 30. Interested individuals can apply through the Baltimore City mayor’s website.
