Officials identified the occupant as Dawn Reed, who was inside the trailer at the time of the incident. She was awakened by one of her dogs, which alerted her to the fire. Despite attempting to extinguish the flames, Reed was unable to stop the spread of the fire and was forced to flee. She managed to escape with some of her pets and was later transported to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Chestertown for treatment.
The fire was discovered by Reed and was determined to have originated from the interior of the camper. Investigators from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office concluded that the preliminary cause of the fire was accidental, resulting from an electrical failure. No smoke alarms or fire suppression systems were present in the camper at the time of the incident.
