Honda is recalling more than 3,300 of its ADV160 scooters from the 2024 and 2025 model years due to a defect that may lead to engine seizure and sudden loss of drive power. The recall, submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects vehicles produced between March 22, 2023, and November 6, 2024, and stems from issues related to the scooter’s oil pump driven gear.

The defect involves excessive wear on the oil pump driven gear, caused by improper design and manufacturing processes. Specifically, a rough surface finish on the steel timing gear and a deformed inner diameter on the polymer oil pump gear led to misalignment and increased gear wear. If the gear wears down completely, the oil pump can fail to rotate, causing inadequate piston lubrication, engine seizure, and ultimately a loss of drive power or an inability to restart the engine.
Honda first became aware of the issue through a quality report from the Thailand market in August 2022, and later received a similar report in the U.S. in July 2024. While the company introduced improvements to the part during the 2025 model year production, some scooters may have been serviced using older, defective parts, prompting their inclusion in the recall.

As of March 21, 2025, Honda reported 28 warranty claims related to the issue in the United States but confirmed no injuries or fatalities. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notifications starting May 26, 2025, and will be asked to bring their scooters to authorized Honda Powersports dealers for replacement of the faulty gear with a redesigned component made from more durable material.
Honda will also offer reimbursement to owners who previously paid for the repairs themselves, in accordance with NHTSA guidelines.
