Rodney Gaines, 35, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and cocaine base, two counts of cocaine distribution, and conspiracy to possess firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking. The evidence presented during the two-and-a-half-week trial showed Gaines coordinated a network of individuals to distribute narcotics in and around Westminster, Maryland. Investigators utilized court-authorized wiretaps to monitor Gaines’s phone conversations and text messages, which revealed coded discussions about drug transactions.

Law enforcement intercepted multiple cocaine sales during the investigation and seized drugs from customers shortly after transactions occurred. Evidence also indicated Gaines directed accomplices to prepare crack cocaine and store the drugs in concealed outdoor locations. Investigators later recovered over $250,000 in suspected drug proceeds from a storage unit tied to the conspiracy. The jury concluded the operation involved at least 280 grams of cocaine base.

The trial also established that firearms were intertwined with the drug operation. In January 2022, wiretap surveillance captured Gaines attempting to acquire two handguns from an associate. Authorities intercepted both firearms, along with ammunition and magazines, before they reached Gaines. Possession or attempted possession of firearms in connection with drug trafficking significantly increases potential penalties under federal law.

Sentencing will be determined by a federal judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and various statutory factors. While Gaines faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years for the narcotics conspiracy, he could receive a much longer sentence depending on the court’s findings.
