Tesla, Inc. has announced a recall affecting vehicles from its Model S and Model X lineup due to an issue with incorrectly installed driver-side airbags. The recall, designated as NHTSA Recall No. 25V-172, was initiated after Tesla identified instances where service operators installed airbag units with incompatible horn configurations, potentially rendering the horn inoperative.

The affected 91 vehicles include certain Model Year (MY) 2021 to 2024 Model S and MY 2021 to 2025 Model X vehicles produced between May 13, 2021, and December 11, 2024. The defect involves the installation of airbag variants with mismatched horn types—either a non-mechanical horn pad in a mechanical steering wheel or a mechanical horn pad in a non-mechanical steering wheel. In both cases, the horn functionality is compromised while the airbag itself remains operational.
Tesla identified the issue during a routine review of driver-side airbag service consumption records on December 10, 2024. A detailed analysis of service records and vehicle configurations conducted between December 12, 2024, and March 12, 2025, revealed the error in 91 vehicles. The company made the decision to voluntarily recall the affected vehicles on March 12, 2025. To date, Tesla has reported four warranty claims related to the condition but has found no evidence of collisions, fatalities, or injuries associated with the issue.

As part of the recall remedy, Tesla will inspect and, if necessary, replace the driver-side airbag on affected vehicles at no charge to customers. Since all affected vehicles remain covered under Tesla’s new vehicle warranty, there will be no reimbursement offered for pre-notice repairs. Tesla implemented corrective measures in its service system on March 5, 2025, by adding a steering wheel type configuration selector to ensure that future service operations match the correct airbag variant with the steering wheel configuration.
Tesla plans to notify all stores and service centers about the recall by March 21, 2025, and owners will receive notification letters by May 20, 2025. The replacement process is expected to ensure that affected vehicles regain proper horn functionality, addressing the identified safety risk.
