Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate in Somerset County. The inmate, identified as 28-year-old Shane Lanham, was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel on March 29. Lanham was serving time at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover, where he was discovered unresponsive by correctional officers.

A preliminary investigation by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, which was contacted by the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services Internal Investigative Unit (DPSCS IID), suggests that Lanham was in a cell with another inmate before being found. The identity of the suspect, who is also an inmate, is being withheld as the investigation continues, and no charges have been filed at this time.
Investigators from the Maryland State Police and crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded to the scene. Their findings will be submitted to the Somerset County State’s Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
