The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an updated safety alert regarding certain frozen half-shell oysters from the Republic of Korea (ROK), warning that they may be contaminated with norovirus. The voluntary recall, initiated by Daihung Mulsan Co., Ltd. (KR 7 SP), now includes oysters harvested from Designated Area II on January 31, 2024, February 1, 2024, and February 2, 2024, in addition to the previously recalled oysters harvested on January 30, 2024, and February 4, 2024. These oysters were distributed by Sea Win, Inc. of Los Angeles, California, and may have reached other states as well.

The recall was prompted by a norovirus outbreak in California, leading to concerns that the oysters may cause illness if consumed. Norovirus infection typically results in symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal cramps. The illness can be particularly severe for individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly, potentially leading to dehydration and other complications. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and may last one to three days.

The FDA is advising restaurants and food retailers in California and beyond not to serve or sell these oysters and to dispose of any remaining stock. Consumers who have purchased frozen half-shell oysters from KR-7-SP, harvested from Designated Area II on the specified dates, are urged not to eat them and should discard them immediately. The FDA has also recommended that consumers experiencing symptoms of norovirus infection seek medical attention and report their illness to their local health department.
