General Motors is recalling 934 vehicles in the United States after identifying a potential defect that could result in the sudden loss of electric power steering assistance. Affected models include select 2016–2018 Cadillac CTS, 2017–2018 Cadillac ATS, 2017–2018 Chevrolet Camaro, and 2017–2018 Chevrolet Corvette vehicles. The defect is linked to faulty steering gear assemblies that may cause intermittent electrical disconnections, potentially disabling power steering while driving.

The recall follows an investigation initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in January 2025 after a customer complaint involving a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. GM and its steering gear supplier, Robert Bosch Automotive Steering LLC, discovered that certain vehicles previously excluded from a 2019 recall (19V086) may still contain suspect components. Using improved manufacturing data traceability tools, the supplier identified 1,017 vehicles globally with potentially defective parts, including the 934 now recalled in the U.S.
If the defect occurs, drivers will retain manual steering capabilities, but with increased effort required—especially at lower speeds—raising the risk of a crash. The problem can persist for an entire ignition cycle but may resolve after restarting the vehicle. A warning message and audible alert are expected to notify drivers of the issue.

GM’s analysis found 43 field complaints associated with the newly identified group of vehicles, though no accidents or injuries have been reported. The defect stems from an error in the manufacturing of printed circuit boards within the steering gear assembly, which has since been corrected as of June 2017. Dealers were notified of the recall on March 20, 2025, and customer notifications are set to begin on May 5, 2025. Owners will be eligible for free repairs, including replacement of the faulty steering gear assembly, and may seek reimbursement for prior related repairs.
