On January 14, 2025, nearly 400 early-career scientists were honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) at Fort Detrick, Maryland. PECASE is the highest recognition granted by the federal government to professionals at the beginning of their independent research careers. Several researchers funded by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) were among the recipients, recognized for their contributions to medical advancements in areas such as spinal cord injury, osteoarthritis, melanoma, influenza, prostate cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and toxic exposure.

Among the awardees, Abidemi Bolu Ajiboye, Ph.D., and his team at Case Western Reserve University received funding from the Spinal Cord Injury Research Program in 2018. Their research focuses on integrating electrical stimulation and brain-computer interfaces to restore movement and sensation in individuals with quadriplegia. Similarly, Ambika Bajpayee, Ph.D., of Northeastern University, utilized a 2016 Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program grant to develop cartilage-penetrating therapeutics aimed at treating osteoarthritis, potentially reducing the need for joint replacement surgeries.
In the field of cancer research, Alexander Gusev, Ph.D., at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute received a 2023 Melanoma Research Program award to identify biomarkers that could improve treatment decisions for stage III melanoma. Likewise, Antonina Mitrofanova, Ph.D., at Rutgers University, secured a 2023 Prostate Cancer Research Program grant to develop computational algorithms that predict metastatic growth and treatment resistance in castration-resistant prostate cancer.
